SUKKUR An archaeological site has been found in Lakhian Jo Daro near Goth Nihal Khoso in the district of Sukkur which historians suspect may be 5,500 years old. The remains are said to be older than those of Moenjodaro. The find is said to belong to the Kot Diji era.

A team of 22 archaeologists headed by the chairman of Shah Abdul Latif University's archaeology department and Lakhian Jo Daro project director Ghulam Mustafa Shar found semi-precious and precious stones and utensils made of clay, copper and other metals during continuing excavation on Thursday.

Some within the project believe the site may be even older. Mr Shar told Dawn that the remains of a mirror factory in the project's second block indicate that the site could even be up to 9,000 years old.

At the same time he conceded that more research was required before a conclusion could be made. He said the work on the second block would continue for a month and more items could be found. 'At present, we can say that it is older than Moenjodaro,' Mr Shar said.

Archaeology professors and students from Punjab University, Peshawar University and Islamabad will be joining the research team shortly.
