ISLAMABAD Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on Saturday ordered the District Police Officer (DPO) Khairpur (Sindh) to submit a report before the Supreme Court in a week on the brutal murder of Tasleem Solangi, the woman who was thrown before hungry dogs to teach her a lesson.
Directions to the Sindh police were issued while taking notice of a demand by the Human Rights Committee of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) for re-investigation of the honour killing of Tasleem Solangi who was first shot at and later thrown before hungry dogs by her relatives.
Presided over by Raja Shafqat Abbasi, the human rights committee of the PBC had expressed the hope that the government would bring the culprits to book and will give them an exemplary punishment.
The matter was taken up by the committee on a letter by the Asian Human Rights Commission, Hong Kong.
The committee also hoped that the apex court would take up the issue since it had re-activated its human rights cell.
Separately, the committee approved a suggestion to hold an introductory meeting of members with Islamabad-based representatives of different non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to foster cooperation in their respective activities in the field of human rights and form a network.
It appreciated the government for signing the UN Convention against Torture after 27 years of its passage by the UN. Since the convention is yet to be ratified, the committee called upon the government for its ratification at the earliest.
