Multan watchful as Chenab swells

MULTAN, July 31 More than 120,000 cusec water will pass through the River Chenab here on Sunday (today) and more than 270,000 cusec late on Monday night, irrigation officials said here on Saturday.

Keeping in view the situation in other parts of the country, the district administration has finalised arrangements to deal with the low level flood in the district.

District Coordination Officer Khurram Agha on Saturday visited riverine areas of the district like Mouza Beli, Mouza Hamrat, Jhok Nonaan Wali, Muzaffarabad and Shershah to see evacuation of people. He asked people to move to relief camps set up by the district government. He visited relief camps and distributed food among people.

Irrigation Executive Engineer Atif Ali Khan said 270,000 cusec water from the River Jhelum had reached Trimun Barrage on the River Chenab and this floodwater would pass through Multan district during the late hours of Monday night.

EDO (Revenue) Javed Mehmood Akhtar said funds had been released to provide tents and food to flood affected people and revenue officials had been deputed at 17 relief camps to smoothly run the relief work.

EDO (Health) Syed Zafarul Islam said 45 doctors had been deputed at the relief camps and each doctor was assisted by a dispenser, vaccinator and DC supervisor. He said medicines had been sent to relief camps and vaccination of people against typhoid and diarrhoea was under way.

District Officer for Civil Defence Shahid Pervez said 300 volunteers had been put on alert to deal with any emergency. According to irrigation officials, water level fell at Rasul Barrage, Marrala, Khanki Barrage, Qadirabad Barrage and Trimun Barrage on Saturday.
