Hurriyat chief quizzed

SRINAGAR, April 11: Indian police on Thursday questioned the chief of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference over money seized from a woman arrested outside Pakistan’s diplomatic mission in New Delhi.

Police questioned Abdul Gani Bhat, the chairman of APHC, for an hour at his home here.

The questioning came two months after police in the Indian capital arrested a Kashmiri woman, Anjum Jamrud Habib, as she left the Pakistan High Commission and said they found 300,000 Indian rupees (6,250 dollars) in her possession.

Anjum Habib heads the Muslim Khawateen Markaz, one of the 23 parties comprising the APHC.

Police alleged the money was meant for Kashmiri militants and that Mr Bhat had arranged Anjum Habib’s meeting with Pakistan’s ambassador in New Delhi. The Pakistan envoy was accused of giving the money to Habib.

The envoy was immediately expelled by New Delhi, resulting in instant reciprocal action by Islamabad.

“They (policemen) questioned me for one hour,” said Mr Bhat, adding that the policemen were “very polite” and did not search the house.—AFP
