KHAIRPUR, Feb 2 A student was killed and two others received injuries in a clash between two groups of students at the Shah Abdul Latif University (SALU) campus on Tuesday.

The attackers used dagger and clips as a result of which Mohammad Khan Gambhir, Qamaruddin Junejo and Zeeshan Ahmed Junejo received injuries.

They were taken to Civil Hospital Khairpur where Mohammad Khan breathed his last.

Classes at the university were suspended after the incident and the students were sent-back to homes.

A group of students reached Khairpur city and appealed to shopkeepers to pull their shutters to mourn the death of the student.

A complete shutter down strike was observed in the city as the main bazaars, markets and the civic centre remained closed.

Mohammad Khan was student of BA part-I in the International Relations Department, Qamaruddin of BA part-I in Urdu Department and Zeeshan of BSc, part-I, Chemistry Department. The three students belong to the Sindh People's Students Federation (SPSF).

SPSF activists, carrying the body of Mohammad Khan, staged a sit-in on the National Highway near Shah Hussain Chowk and blocked it. The relatives of deceased student also joined the demonstration and burnt tyres.

Led by SPSF leader Mubin Narejo, the protesters raised slogans against the university administration and sought arrest of the accused involved in murder of the student.

The protesters alleged that the incident was a result of negligence of the university administration.

They also blocked roads near Therhi bypass, which led to suspension of traffic for more than two hours.

Khairpur DPO Pir Mohammad Shah and SP investigation, Ghulam Akbar Wagan, held negotiations with the protesting students and assured them of immediate arrest of the culprits. The protesting students dispersed and took the body to native village of the deceased Waris Gambhir Goth.

In a press release the SALU administration maintained that a clash took place between two groups of students over seats in the point-bus on Monday. Reconciliation was under way at the canteen on Tuesday during which one group of students attacked the students of other group, leading to the death and injuries.

When contacted, DCO Mohammad Abbas Baloch said that post-mortem of the body was conducted at Waris Gambhir village by a team of doctors. He added that he was continuously in touch with police to arrest the accused.

President of Shehri Ittehad Abdul Qayoom Shaikh expressed sorrow on the death of the student.

Press Secretary of SALU Teachers' Association Professor Imdad Chandio also expressed his sorrow over death of a student and injuries to others and urged the university administration to play its role to defuse tension at the campus.

No FIR was lodged till the filing of this report.
