ISLAMABAD, May 18 President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday appointed Justice Agha Rafiq Ahmed Khan as Chief Justice of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) for a two-year period.
Justice Rafiq, who earlier served as law secretary, would assume the post on June 5 after the retirement of Chief Justice Haziqul Khairi, who is retiring on June 4.
Justice Rafiq has been replaced by Justice (retd) Riaz Kiani as new law secretary. He was earlier elevated to the post of the Lahore High Court judge and also served as chairman of the Punjab Services Tribunal.
Earlier, the government had named Justice (retd) Tanvir Ahmed Khan as law secretary but his name was dropped in favour of Justice (retd) Kiani.
The move is said to be based on decisions taken by the National Judicial Policy Making Committee to recall all judges and judicial officers from the executive and get them posted under their respective courts.
Justice Agha Rafiq's seniority was restored since 1995 when he had to leave the judiciary after the Supreme Court judgment in the Al Jihad Trust case.
