MIANWALI, July 24 Jail authorities have shifted the three under trial prisoners, who were allegedly instrumental in creating unrest in the Central Jail on Friday, to the District Jail, Sargodha.
Prisoners ran riot at the Central Jail here on Friday after jail officials allegedly tortured some of their fellow inmates.
According to jail officials, murder accused Kifayatullah, his brother Inayatullah and Muhammad Zaman refused to undergo a body search and thrashed constable Amir Ahmad when jail officials tried to search them for cell phones on Thursday. As a result, jail authorities locked them in the high security cell.
On Friday, these prisoners took three jail wardens hostage in their cell during food distribution and instigated their fellow inmates to run riot against the jail administration. They also informed their relatives and friends through a cell phone who gathered outside the jail, staged a demonstration, pelted the jail with stones and blocked Mianwali-Rawalpindi Road.
The jail authorities called in the police who dispersed the protesters and cleared the blocked road.
The city police registered a case against 17 unknown demonstrators under sections 440, 353 and 186 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
The relatives of the inmates said jail authorities tortured the prisoners when they raised a voice against irregularities in the jail. They called for medical check-up of tortured prisoners and an inquiry into the incident. Jail Superintendent Asad Warraich said now the situation was completely under control.
