FAISALABAD, April 19: Four nominees of the opposition-backed group in the Tehsil Municipal Administration (city) were elected chairmen of the standing committees on Saturday.

The Nazims of city and district governments fielded candidates under the banner of chairman group while the opposition, supported by local leaders of the PPP and the PML-N, constituted city group.

Of the 160 members of the TMA city, 157 exercised their right to franchise for the nine seats.

The following nominees of the city group were elected chairmen of the committees given in parenthesis.

Rana Israr Ahmed Khan (finance), Abdul Hafeez Bawa (regulation), Mian Sarfraz Ahmed (accounts) and Mian Iqbal Akhtar (sports and cultural).

The following candidates of the chairman group were elected chairmen of the committees given in parenthesis.

Rana Muhammad Iman (planning & coordination), Prof Muhammad Siddiq (Insaaf), Akram Ghauri (bylaws) and Haroon Rasheed (code of conduct).

Ghulam Bheek Awan and Nadeem Sadiq Dogar bagged 60 votes each for the elections of chairman of the infrastructure and services committee. Both have reportedly applied for votes’ recounting.

Meanwhile, city group members alleged that District Nazim Zahid Nazir and City Nazim Mumtaz Ali Cheema pressurized the councillors to cast vote in favour chairman group candidates.
