KHAIRPUR: Teachers want VC removed

Published April 10, 2009

KHAIRPUR, April 9 A group of teachers of the Shah Abdul Latif University took out a rally at the campus on Thursday to protest against what they called illegal acts of the university's vice-chancellor.

Led by Dr Abdul Majeed Chandio and Asad Shah Abidi and carrying banners inscribed with slogans of “Save SALU and protect teachers from harassment,” the protesters marched on different roads at the campus.

Later, a meeting was held at teachers' committee room. Speaking on the occasion, Professor Imdad Chandio, Abdul Majeed, Asad Abidi and others said that certain teachers had been deprived of their legal benefits by the vice-chancellor.

They said that Professor Dr Ghulam Mustafa Shar was illegally removed from the chairmanship of department of archaeology. They demanded reinstatement of Dr Shar and an inquiry into his removal.

Through a resolution, they demanded removal of Vice-Chancellor Dr Nilofer Shaikh, who was appointed during Pervez Musharraf regime.

TRAIN STOPS The Anjuman-i-Tajiran and Civil Society Khairpur have expressed concern over cancellation of stop of two more trains at the Khairpur railway station and non-availability of basic facilities at the station.

The railway department has announced to cancel the stop of Shalimar Express and Khyber Mail at the Khaipur railway station from April 15.

At a meeting of Anjumna-i-Tajiran, presided over by its president Qutubuddin Shaikh, it was decided that protest would be launched if the facility would not be restored.

Speaking on the occasion, Chaudhry Sajid Hussain and Haji Yar Mohammad Shaikh said that for many years there had been a bad arrangement for electricity at the Khairpur railway station. Both platforms were in a dilapidated condition, causing difficulties for passengers.

They said there was no seating arrangement on the platforms and the waiting halls were in very bad condition. There were no toilet and no clean drinking water facility at the station.

They said there was no proper security arrangement at the station and the incidents of snatching were on the rise, particularly at the arrival time of Tezgam late in the night.

At a separate meeting, Civil Society Khairpur chairman Mir Munawar Talpur criticised railway authorities for cancelling the stop of two trains at the Khairpur railway station.
