Mubbashir claims tennis title

KARACHI, Jan 25 Mubbashir Afridi beat Omer Shahid in three set duel to win the men's singles title of the Modern Club tennis tournament for members held at their premises the other day.

Mubbashir recovered after conceding the second set to post 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

Omer had some consolation as he gave a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing to Abdul Rehman to claim the juniors' under-18 crown.

The tennis final was preceded by competitions in snooker, table tennis and squash.

The annual event was revived after a lapse of many years by administrator of the club veteran hockey Olympian Abdul Waheed Khan who also managed the Buenos Aires gold medal winning Pakistan hockey team.

Davis Cuppers Aqeel Khan, Jalil Khan and Yasir Khan are the product of Modern Club.

Dr Sattar Jaffer and Abdul Razzak Jaffer who graced the occasion gave away the prizes.

Men's singles final Mubbashir Afridi bt Omer Shahid 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.

Men's doubles final Kaleem Ghanchi and Ali Bhagat bt Abdul Rehman and Omer Shahid 6-4, 7-5.

Boys' under-18 singles final Omer Shahid bt Abdul Rehman 6-3, 6-0.

Boys' under-18 doubles final Adil Kohari and Abdul Rehman bt Basit Gabol and Nameer Shamsi 6-1, 6-3.

Juniors' under-15 singles final Talha Zubair Surmawala bt Ahmad Hasan Khan 6-3, 6-4.

Boys' under-11 singles final Bilal Imran bt Khizer Imran 6-2, 6-3.

Veteran's singles final Azharuddin bt Karim Gul Agha 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Veteran's doubles final Farrukh Saleem and Akhtar Aliman bt Azharuddin and Karim Gul Agha 6-4, 6-4.
