SUKKUR, May 14: Law and order situation in Jacobabad city returned to normal on Tuesday as shops and bazaars opened and traffic was also observed on roads.

On Monday the city had been on shutter down strike with sit-ins and violent protests over rigging in various constituencies of Jacobabad district as thousands of residents and townspeople took to the streets to record their protest.

The protests had also turned violent when PML-N supporters were ambushed by armed men of a community in Jam Mohammad Talani Colony casing fire arm injuries to three PML-N activists.

Later when PML-N activists had been going to the Jacobabad Civil Hospital to inquire about their injured fellows, an altercation erupted between PPP and Peoples Student Federation workers and PML-N activists when the latter had been passing by the PPP district secretariat near the hospital.

A relentless two-hour-long gun battle had ensued in which 13 more PML-N workers had been injured.

Later in the evening, angry PML-N activists had torched the PPP Jacobabad secretariat. In view of the situation, the army had been called in on Monday in additionto Rangers and police personnel who had already been deployed in the city for safe polling.

The army personnel left the city on Tuesday as Jacobabad city started bearing signs of normalcy on Tuesday with commercial centres and traffic up and running.

However, heavy contingents of Rangers and police are still deployed for tackle and expected situation amd were seen patrolling throughout the day.

Meanwhile the Sindh government transferred Jacobabad SSP Jawed Jiskani to Nawabshah and replaced him with Nawabshah SSP Zafar Iqbal Malik.

Cases registeredThe cases for Monday’s violence were registered at the Civil Lines police station.

The first case was registered on the complaint of Majid Khan Soomro against Sindh leader of the People’s Student Federation (PSF) Deedar Ali Jakhrani, Jacobabad district president Ali Khan Jakhrani, vice president Siddique Lahar, Jacobabad district president of the Sindh People’s Youth Organisation (SPYO) Bahadur Ali Mugheri, and others including Rehmatullah Khoso, Ghulam Nabi Mugheri, Aamir Khokhar, Farooque Khokhar, Tony Sajjad Mastoi, Asghar Sial, Mumtaz Jamali and Malook Mugheri.

They were booked under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Another case was registered by the police under Section 188 of the PPC, against Khayam Soomro for alleged exhibition of arms and violence.

In yet another case registered on the complaint of SPYO leader, 55 persons, including prominent members of the Soomro community — Haroon Rashid Soomro, Majid Soomro, Luqman Soomro, Khayam Soomro, Moula Bux Soomro, Ayaz Soomro, Gul Muhammad Soomro, Sabir Soomro, Rehman Soomro, Asad Soomro, Rab Nawaz Soomro, Abdul Karim Soomro, Abdullah Soomro, Ghulam Hyder Soomro, Farooque Soomro, Akhtiar Ali Soomro, Ali Hassan Soomro and Abdul Quddus Soomro — were booked for setting fire to the PPP district secretariat near Civil hospital.

No arrests had been made till Tuesday night.
