Watchman shot dead in Swabi

SWABI/KARAK, June 4: Unidentified persons shot dead a watchman at the archaeological site of Aziz Dheri in Swabi on Tuesday.

Police said that the deceased identified as Ishaq Ali belonged to police department. Eyewitness said that Ali was on a routine duty at the site when two unidentified motorcyclists opened firing on him. He was killed on the spot. The assailants managed to escape.

It was learnt that only two watchmen were deployed to perform duty at the Aziz Dheri archeological site on turn.

In Karak, Banda Daud Shah police foiled a sabotage attempt by seizing an explosive-laden vehicle and arresting two suspected persons at Mansoor Garh checkpost on Tuesday.

Police said that a truck bearing registration number E-8454 loaded with fruits was going to Banda Daud Shah when police stopped it at the checkpost for routine checking. The driver and another person tried to flee when the vehicle stopped but police chased and arrested them, they said.

The vehicle was laden with explosive. Sources said that the accused could be suicide bombers.

They were identified as Afzal Rehman and Niaz Mohammad, residents of North Waziristan Agency.
