Disqualification: Musharraf challenges PHC verdict
ISLAMABAD, June 29: Former president retired General Pervez Musharraf challenged in the Supreme Court on Saturday a verdict of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) disqualifying him from contesting elections for national and provincial assemblies.
On May 1, a larger bench of the PHC had imposed a lifetime ban on Gen Musharraf after dismissing his appeal against the rejection of his nomination papers for NA-32 (Chitral) constituency.
Citing the Election Commission of Pakistan as respondent, Malik Qamar Afzal, the counsel for Gen Musharraf, questioned the jurisdiction and judicial authority of the PHC to disqualify his client from contesting elections.
The verdict was a violation of fundamental rights ensured in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and provisions of the constitution of the country, the appeal said.
