Punjab capture gold at Games snooker

KARACHI, July 3: Fancied Punjab captured gold after registering an emphatic 3-1 victory over Sindh in the final of the National Games snooker event at the Pakistan Sports Complex on Wednesday.

International Mohammad Sajjad, a former runner-up of Asian Snooker Championship, stole the limelight by conjuring the highest break (124) in the opening singles against former Sindh champion Mohammad Ishtiaq.

World amateur snooker champion, Mohammad Asif, consolidated Punjab’s position by getting the better of Abdul Sattar 61-37.

Sindh, however, fought back into the game and managed to reduce the lead (1-2) through the pair of Sattar and Umair Alam who accounted for the duo of Sajjad and Imran Shahzad 80-31 in the doubles.

In the reverse singles, Sajjad was home 72-38 against Sattar to help Punjab clinch the gold in the snooker team event.

Hosts Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were awarded the bronze medal.

Asif Bajwa, Rana Mujahid and Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Federation (PBSF) president, Alamgir Shaikh, graced the final and gave away the prizes.

Results:Final:Punjab bt Sindh 3-1 (124-0, 61-37, 31-80, 72-38).
