SANGHAR, July 4: Two lives were lost when a moderate rainfall, preceded by a windstorm, hit Sanghar, Badin and Umerkot and Mirpurkhas districts on Thursday.

Both deaths took place in Sanghar district where most parts of Khipro and Jam Nawaz Ali talukas kept receiving moderate to heavy rainfall combined with strong wind.

The roof of a house situated in Shah Colony of Khipro town caved in, resulting in the death of 40-year-old Irfana and injuries to her three children and husband who were taken to the Khipro Taluka Hospital for treatment. The second victim was 50-year-old Allah Bachayo Kunbher who was electrocuted when lightning struck near Borechi village, around 16 kilometres from Khipro town.

Meanwhile, the strong wind caused about 40 electricity poles to get uprooted, thus causing an electricity breakdown in Khipro and its adjoining areas.

BADIN: The rain broke the week-long heat spell in Badin district where the loadshedding had been adding to the miseries of people.

Cities and towns which received rain included Badin, Nindo Shaher, Talhar, Matli, Digri, Dumbalo and Bokhi village where newly-sown rice paddy was partially damaged.

Rain began at around 8:40 pm while drizzling continued till 10 pm. The electricity went off with the first drop of the rain.

UMERKOT: It also rained in Umerkot and its adjoining areas, much to the satisfaction of growers who had been waiting for irrigation water to sow their crops.

MIRPURKHAS: Moderate rainfall and a mild windstorm also hit various towns of Mirpurkhas district including Mirwah, Gorchani, Digri, Tando Jan Muhammad, Jhuddo, Naokot, Phuladyyoon, Sindhri, Hingorno, Kot Ghulam Muhammad, Jhilori and Khaan, breaking the week-long heat spell.

Rainwater accumulated in the low-lying areas of the district where a power breakdown also occurred.

Strong wind uprooted dozens of trees and signboards in Mirpurkhas city and its outskirts. Shops and markets were closed while the purchasers left the markets after rain.
