Crops hit in Gujranwala: Floodwaters cause havoc in Sialkot, Narowal dists

NAROWAL, July 21: Some 2,000 people have been trapped on the rooftops of their houses at Prana Walah village that is surrounded by about four-foot high floodwater due to the overflowing Basanter nullah near Jassar.

Paddy and other crops over hundreds of acres have also been submerged in at least six other villages of the district.

The nullah overflowed because of recent heavy rains in the area and the floodwater surrounded seven villages, including Prana Wahla, Fasih Pur, Nangli, Doaba and Narang Mianwali.

At Prana Wallah village some 2,000 people have been confined to the rooftops of their houses for the last 24 hours. Walls of some of the houses in the village have also been demolished by the floodwater. People in the flood-hit area are facing hardships and waiting for the government agencies for help.

Lives of hundreds of cattle heads trapped in the flood-hit area are also at risk due to non-availability of fodder. People of the area are trying to move to safer places on their own.

Several electricity pylons and trees were also uprooted in the area, causing power supply disruption in some villages for the last 30 hours.

At some places the affected people protested against the district administration for not providing them any help.

Zafarwal Assistant Commissioner Imtiaz Shahid Gondal told the newsmen the floodwater level was now receding in the affected villages while relief activities were on there.

The floodwater has also damaged the Narowal-Shakargrah railway track near Jassar, while traffic on Narowal-Sialkot road also remained suspended for about eight hours as the road was submerged near Neween Pully.

It is also learnt that Jassar Garrison check posts of Pakistan Rangers have also been hit by floodwater.

According to Rescue 1122 sources, the personnel of the emergency service are busy rescuing the people trapped in the flooded areas.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal visited the flood-hit areas on Sunday and told the district administration to take prompt relief and rescue measures.

GUJRANWALA: Fodder and paddy crops over hundreds of acres were washed away while dozens of villages were flooded on Sunday as Nullah Dek developed a breach near Sadhoke because of high flow.

The officials of district administration and irrigation department were making hectic efforts to control the situation.

District Coordination Officer Tariq Javed Malik has deployed flood control center’s focal person Muhammad Najeeb and Kamoki Assistant Commissioner Dr Safdar Mahmood to take measures to provide relief to the affected people and shift them to safe places along with their cattle.

Heavy rains in the Dek upper areas (catchment) in India caused the nullah to overflow at Nagraywala village while the GT Road near Khori was also submerged.

The village people were moving to safe places along with their household items and cattle.

All departments concerned in the district have been alerted, while health and livestock officials are directed to set up relief camps in the affected areas.

SIALKOT: After disrupting life and damaging property and crops over a vast area on Saturday, the floodwater level started receding in the Chenab, Jammu Munaawar and Tavi rivers, besides Dek, Aik and Palkhu nullahs in the district on Sunday.

The district administration claimed that relief and rescue work was continuing in the flood-hit areas in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Pasrur tehsils and that the situation was ‘under control’.

According to the officials of Sialkot irrigation department, on Sunday the water level in the Chenab dropped to 86,074 cusecs at Head Marala near Sialkot from last night’s peak of 136,000 cusecs. Water flow in Tavi was 6,000 cusecs near Saidpur-Bajwat.

DO (Coordination) Malik Abid Hussain Awan said the water level was also receding in flooded nullahs Aik and Dek. He said on Sunday the 5,000 cusecs were flowing in Dek and 8,000 cusecs in Aik nullahs.

DCO Iftikhar Ali Sahu told reporters on Sunday the 20-foot wide breach in Dek near Lessar Kalan village of Zafarwal tehsil and another 25-foot wide breach in Aik near Rohail Garha in Sialkot developing late on Saturday have been plugged by the district administration.

Floodwater from Aik nullah overflowed near Sialkot city’s congested Naikapura and Bogarha localities and entered the houses on Saturday evening.

On Sunday, Aik nullah overflowed near Uggoki and Bhopalwala in Sambrial tehsil, inundating as many as 45 villages -- 30 near Uggoki and 15 near Bhopalwala. The standing seasonal crops on hundreds of acres were also submerged at these villages.

Reportedly, there was four to five feet high floodwater at Uggoki villages near Sialkot.

Similarly, some 27 villages of Pasrur tehsil were inundated by Dek waters on Saturday. Dek overflowed on Sunday near Pasrur tehsil’s Chahoor village because of recent downpour in the region.

Reportedly, there was three-to-four feet high floodwater in Pasrur tehsil’s 27 flood-hit villages, including Jabbokey, Nawaadhey, Chahoor, Machchaana, Eispur, Seehowal, Mehtabpur, Hunjali, Tharo Mandi, Shehzada, Bharat, Khewa Bajwa, Saarh Fatah, Punjgrayeen Bajwa, Rasul Pur, Jeesti Wala, Qila, Kaka Pan, Punj Graayien Bajwa, Sojowali and Saarh Fataah.

Flow in Dek nullah started receding near Mehtabpur-Hunjali village in Pasrur tehsil on Sunday afternoon. Seasonal crops on hundreds of acres were also inundated in Pasrur tehsil.

Meanwhile, Abdul Rehman (7), son of a trader, Mehmood Akhtar, died and six other members of the family were injured seriously when the roof of a room collapsed during the heavy rain in Tolla village of Shakargarh tehsil on Saturday.

The family was asleep when the roof suddenly caved in, killing the child on the spot.

According to the Flood Forecasting Division, River Chenab may have high flood at Head Marala near Sialkot during the next 24 hours.

Sialkot DCO Iftikhar Ali Sahu told newsmen on Sunday the district had been divided into 22 sectors under a flood protection plan, while 33 flood relief centers had been established in four tehsils.

He said the special vigilance teams were monitoring the flood situation in the River Chenab round the clock while all the departments concerned had been alerted to meet any further flood emergency in the district.

SHEIKHUPURA: Paddy and maize crops were submerged by the floodwaters from Ravi near Makhowal, Saranhawali, Chopraywala and Abbas Nagar villages in Narang Mandi police limits on Sunday.
