School blown up in Mohmand

GHALANAI/KOHAT, Aug 19: A government-run school was blown up by militants in Haleemzai tehsil of Mohmand Agency on the night between Sunday and Monday.

Sources said militants planted an improvised explosive device in primary school for boys in Kamali Haleemzai Ghazi Baig area that went off at Midnight, destroying two rooms of the building. The furniture and record of the school were also destroyed.

So far 120 educational institutions including a degree college and four high, four middle and several primary schools, have been blown up in Mohmand Agency.

Agency Education Officer Said Mohammad Khan said that no causality was reported in the blast because no one was present in the school at the time of explosion.

He said that 14 destroyed schools were reconstructed in the area and 24 more would be rebuilt soon.

Security forces launched a search operation in the area and arrested 12 persons including owner of the school land under collective responsibility clause of FCR.

In Kohat, security was beefed up at Kohat tunnel after fresh threats were issued by militants to blow up important installations in the region.

Officials said that militants were threatening to blow up installations in Kohat. After the fresh threats, security was beefed up at all shrines, mosques, roads, hospitals and defence installations, they added.

They said that strict checking of vehicles was being carried out at the northern and southern portals of tunnel.

The tunnel was attacked three times in 2008 and 2009 but survived the huge blasts.

The tunnel administration had issued a statement saying that passengers should try to help the authorities in keeping the tunnel safe in national interest.
