Govt college building for another varsity
SARGODHA, Sept 19: The Punjab government has taken over the historic building and playgrounds of the Government College to establish a university.
The government had earlier said the varsity administration would operate till the shifting of entire departments to a building in the outskirts of the city.
It was in 1929 when the Government College was established at Shahpur and it was shifted to Sargodha in the army barracks after the creation of Pakistan. Its own building was set up over hundreds of acres and the college set up eight postgraduate disciplines in 1987-88.
In 2002 the building and playgrounds of the college were handed over to the University of Sargodha. It did away with intermediate and degree classes although the old building was sufficient for the students and faculty.
They were shifted to a building about 15 kilometres from the city, where there is no electricity or other basic facilities.
Meanwhile, the varsity is converting the playgrounds into various blocks by constructing buildings. It has set up its campuses of medical college and agriculture college in the outskirts of the city.
As many as 255 schemes for upgrade and improvement of buildings are in doldrums as Rs15 million out of Rs60 million have been released so far.
