Broom blazes as Otago thrash Scorchers

JAIPUR, Sept 25: Neil Broom produced one of the more remarkable innings in Otago’s cricketing history as he led the Volts to a comprehensive 62-run victory over Australia’s Perth Scorchers in their Champions League Twenty20 match at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium on Wednesday.

Ian Butler then took 3-47, and also had a direct hit and a catch, as the Volts continued their fine run of form to top Group ‘A’.

Put in to bat, Otago put on a monumental 242-4 in their 20 overs before they halted the Scorchers at 180-6.

Otago suffered a shock start by losing opener Hamish Rutherford (2) and skipper Brendon McCullum (0) cheaply. But Broom (117 not out) and Derek de Boorder (45) put on 67 runs for the third wicket to take the New Zealanders out of trouble.

After de Boorder, whose 28-ball knock included five boundaries and two sixes, was bowled by Adam Voges, Ryan ten Doeschate (66) with Broom piled on 128-runs for the fourth wicket to put Otago in a dominant position.

In reply, the Scorchers lost two wickets in the opening over and never got close to the required run-rate. Zimbabwean-born Hilton Cartwright weighed in with 73 not out, but the Perth side still fell a woeful 62 runs short.

In Tuesday’s Group ‘B’ match, an impressive four-wicket haul by spinner Sunil Narine failed to stifle an unrelenting Sunrisers Hyderabad, who recaptured the momentum to seal a four-wicket win over Trinidad and Tobago in Mohali.

Narine’s four wickets for nine runs in four overs put Trinidad & Tobago in control for the most part of the second innings and in sight of victory at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium.

However, a remarkable fight-back, led by a stunning counter-attacking half-century from Thisara Perera (57 not out), helped propel Hyderabad safely to 164 after Trinidad posted 160.

Darren Bravo’s 44-ball 66 went in vain as the Trinidadians lost the momentum and conceded their first defeat following their opening win against Brisbane Heat on Sunday.
