KARACHI: A professor of Islamia College was shot by unknown gunmen near Karachi’s Jamshed Quarters on Thursday, DawnNews reported.

Professor Ghulam Nabi Wassan sustained severe injuries when unidentified persons opened fire on his car near Islamia College in the city. The gunmen managed to flee from the site of incident. The professor was immediately shifted to a local hospital for treatment.

According to the police, unidentified persons opened fire when the professor attempted to resist a robbery attempt. The matter was still under investigation, police added.

Meanwhile, the Sindh Professors’ and Lecturers’ Association (SPLA) strongly condemned the firing and announced boycott of educational activities across all institutions in Sindh.

Karachi, the capital of Sindh, has been a witness of incidents of violence and targeted killings for many years and the situation remains unchanged in several parts of the city.

Earlier this year in March, renowned college principal and campaigner of sectarian harmony Professor Sibt-e-Jafar Zaidi was gunned down in an apparent sectarian attack in Karachi’s Liaquatabad area.

Moreover, prominent educationist Syed Azfar Rizvi was also shot dead on sectarian ground in the city’s Karimabad area in June.
