Fresh trial in Benazir murder case begins

RAWALPINDI, Oct 8: An Anti-terrorism Court (ATC) of RawalpindiTuesday commenced fresh trial in Benazir Bhutto murder case and summoned four witnesses on October 22.

During the proceedings a local lawyer filed an application in the court seeking to defend the former president general (retired) Pervez Musharraf. The court, however, dismissed the application.

The lawyer Akhtar Shah in the application had adopted before the court that the president office has immunity and a former president may not be held responsible for an incident occurred during his tenure.

FIA’s special prosecutor Chaudhry Mohammad Azhar opposed the application of Shah saying that there is already a defence counsel in the ATC who is defending the former president.

He said that the applicant wanted to waste the precious time of the court and to linger on the proceedings of murder case.

ATC Judge Chaudhry Habibur Rehman summoned four doctors – Dr Hina Dr Rida, Dr Amjad and Dr Ashraf – of Benazir Bhutto General Hospital and District Headquarters Hospital and adjourned the further proceedings till October 22.
