Punjab ready for LG polls in Dec
LAHORE, Oct 10: Provincial Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Rana Sanaullah says the delimitation of constituencies for local body elections has been completed.
He told reporters at the Punjab Assembly cafeteria on Thursday that the delimited constituencies had been put on display at the offices of the delimitation offices in districts for inviting objections from the general public.
He claimed no political consideration was undertaken during the fresh delimitations and these would be notified in the first week of November, and the Election Commission would be asked to hold polls in the first week of December.
Under the new local body system, he said, the provincial capital would be a metropolitan corporation, while eight divisional headquarters would be municipal corporations. There would be 35 district councils and 144 municipal committees as Sialkot and Murree had also been given the status of municipal corporations.
He said local body polls could not be held on a party basis and the ECP had also written to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, which had announced the electoral exercise on a party basis, to review its decision.
To a query about abolishing death penalty, he said the Constitution did not allow repeal of this punishment from the penal code as the basic law bars the government from framing any law repugnant to Quran and Sunnah.
He told a questioner that former army chief Pervez Musharraf had been granted bail by courts and his party would abide by the court verdict.
