Seven die as bus catches fire in India

NEW DELHI: Police say a bus caught fire after an accident in southern India, killing at least seven people and injuring another 42 passengers.

Police officer Kotagi Kallappa says the accident happened after the bus hit a road divider early Thursday near Hubli in Karnataka state, nearly 1,800 kilometers (1,100 miles) south of New Delhi.

Kallappa says the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, and six people got serious burns.

Other details were not immediately available.

India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually.

Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and aging vehicles.
