Quetta enjoy limelight in Quaid Trophy
KARACHI, Nov 17: Unheralded Quetta took an unexpected first-innings lead when Faisalabad were bowled for 159 on day two of their Quaid-i-Azam Trophy National Cricket Championship match at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad on Sunday.
Resuming at 31-2 in reply to Quetta’s 167, the hosts stumbled to 103-8 before making a partial recovery through lower-order batsman Fahim Ashraf (45). Paceman Gohar Faiz finished with four for 57.
Quetta reached 118-4 in the second innings to hold an overall lead of 126.
Rawalpindi were 169-5 after Sialkot made 247 in their first innings at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot. Rawalpindi pace duo of Nasir Malik (6-69 in 25.4 overs) and Haseeb Azam (4-41 in 22) shared the bowling honours.
Multan made a magnificent recovery from 58-5 to post 293-7 in response to Hyderabad’s 227 at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Multan.
The architects for the home side were Abdul Rehman Muzammil, who completed his maiden first-class century while making an unbeaten 111 (232 balls, 12 fours) and skipper Kashif Naved (86 off 158, 10 boundaries). The two added 169 for the sixth wicket.
Abbottabad reached 146-4 after hosts Peshawar were all out for 364 at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar.
Fine batting by Faisal Mubashir (84) and skipper Imranullah Aslam (69) enabled Bahawalpur recover from 132-5 to 235-5 after Lahore Ravi totalled 281 at the LCCA Ground in Lahore.
Captain Imad Wasim’s all-round showing put Islamabad on top against Lahore Shalimar at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad. The hosts reached 318 after starting day two at 274-7 with Imad adding just four runs to his overnight score of 106.
But Imad then struck with slow left-armers to snare four for 31 in 14.5 overs as Lahore Shalimar mustered 190 to hand the home side a substantial lead of 128 on the first innings. Islamabad then managed 11-0 to extend that lead to 139 at stumps.
The Ravi captain struck 116 — the 26-year-old right-hander’s third first-class ton — from 171 balls in a stay of 287 minutes during which he slammed 13 boundaries after coming to the crease with the home side reeling at 22-3 after opting to bat first.
Left-handed opener Israrullah led Peshawar’s run spree against Abbottabad at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar. Israrullah hammered a breezy 101 off 109 balls with the aid of 11 fours and one six as the hosts totalled 317-6 after winning the toss.Veteran Sajjad Ahmed Jan contributed 88 (144 balls, 12 fours).
Meanwhile, hosts Sialkot posted 221-5 with Faisal Khan scoring 84 after they decided to have first use of the Jinnah Stadium track.
Bowlers were on top at the Multan Cricket Stadium where Hyderabad made 227 all out after being sent in to bat by Multan. But the home team lost both openers in closing at 14-2.
Faisalabad were 31-2 after dismissing Quetta for 167 in their first innings at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad. Paceman Naseer Akram grabbed five for 58 after Faisalabad invited the visitors to bat first upon winning the toss.
