KRL stay undefeated as SNGPL move up

KARACHI, Dec 10: Inspired by a good all-round performance from their veteran skipper Saeed Anwar Jr, Khan Research Laboratories recorded their fifth straight victory in the President’s Cup one-day tournament on Tuesday.

After scoring 36, Saeed snared four wickets for 34 runs as KRL dismissed Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for 149 to win by 66 runs at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi.

The batsmen from both sides struggled. After sent in by PIA skipper Kamran Sajid, KRL mustered a modest 215 all out in the penultimate over of the 45-over fixture.

Champions Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) moved one place to second in the standings by virtue of their fourth triumph in five matches. In their latest fixture, SNGPL downed Pakistan Television (PTV) by four wickets at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.

After losing the toss and asked to bat first, PTV mustered 180 all out with the left-handed No 3 batsman Mohammad Sami making 57. Khurram Shehzad’s off-spinners earned three wickets for 22 runs in nine overs.

SNGPL then knocked off the runs in the 36th over. Azhar Ali, back in the side after undergoing surgery for appendicitis, scored just eight.

Port Qasim Authority (PQA) also moved up the ladder with 35-run defeat of previously second-placed Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) at the Jinnah Stadium in Sialkot.

Former Test stumper Mohammad Salman smashed an unbeaten 91 off 73 deliveries with the aid of 12 boundaries to guide PQA from a shaky 103-5 to imposing 277-9 after ZTBL captain Yasir Hameed opted to field first at the toss. Sohail Khan, the discarded Test speedster, captured four wickets for 41 runs as ZTBL’s chase ended at 242 in the 44th over.

The biggest shock of the day was witnessed at the Diamond Club Ground in Islamabad where United Bank Limited (UBL) pulled off a stunning five-wicket win against National Bank of Pakistan (NBP).

A disciplined bowling effort, after UBL’s latest captain Atif Maqbool won the toss, saw NBP capitulate for 164 in 41 overs. Skipper Kamran Akmal scored run-a-ball 28 while fellow Pakistan reject Fawad Alam hit 67.

UBL reached their target in the 38th over with Mohammad Wajihuddin contributing 40 not out.

Opener Farrukh Shehzad bludgeoned 128 (114 balls, 18 boundaries) to help State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) defeat Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) by 12 runs at the National Cricket Ground in the federal capital.

Farrukh almost single-handed set the platform for SBP’s 307-9 after the bankers had slipped to 70-4 after losing the toss in chilly conditions. All-rounder Rizwan Haider provided the ideal fireworks in the finishing overs with a brilliant 74 not out from just 36 balls. His knock featured seven sixes and three fours.

Wapda responded with 295 before they were dismissed on the second-last ball of the match. Ayaz Tasawwar hit an even 100 with his 75-ball innings containing nine boundaries as well as four sixes.

Slow left-armers Hasan Mahmood and Jalat Khan shared eight wickets between them as SBP celebrated only their second win in five outings.
