Musharraf calls for trial in military, not civil, court

ISLAMABAD: Retired Gen Pervez Musharraf has reiterated that he has committed no crime and that all the cases against him are politically motivated.

Speaking through a video link to an association purportedly representing ex-servicemen, the former dictator said that if at all he had committed any offence he should be tried by a military court, and not a civilian one.

Asia Ishaq, the spokesperson for Gen Musharraf’s party, the All Pakistan Muslim League, said the association whose members the former president addressed enjoyed the support of 250 retired generals and brigadiers.

Gen Musharraf is facing a number of cases and the most serious among these was constituted under article 6 of the constitution.

He is also accused of being involved in the murders of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti.

At the video conference, Gen Musharraf said that although he had not done anything wrong he was ready to face all the cases.

The army, he said, was rendering a lot of sacrifices and he prayed for the success of Chief of Army Staff Gen Raheel Sharif.

He said that he had not received help from any quarter but returned to the country from self-exile as people wanted to see a change in the country.

Meanwhile, sources told Dawn that many retired and serving military officials had met Mr Musharraf at his farmhouse at Chak Shahzad which showed that he enjoyed considerable support among army men.

However, he faces threats from Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan as explosives were recovered from the vicinity of his residence three times in the recent past.
