National Security Policy in final stages of formation, says Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Thursday said the National Security Policy was in final stages of formation which will help the government in effectively combating militancy and eradicating extremism in Pakistan.

He said this in his hour-long discourse to 170 senior civil and military officers, including 14 from other countries, participating in the National Security and War Course at the National Defence University (NDU) in Islamabad.

The minister said that enemy of the country was vague and divided, adding that the security policy is proactive in nature which will address the problems being faced by Pakistan.

He said the new security policy will have three components covert, strategic, and operational.

Chaudhry Nisar said the government initiated dialogue process with the Pakistani Taliban militants in the light of decisions taken during the All Parties Conference (APC), but regretted that a US drone strike disrupted it.

The process of dialogue was started in all earnest with a genuine desire for peace, he added.

The interior minister said that now the government has again started the process of dialogue with the militants. He said the government wants a durable solution to eradicate terrorism from the country and the use of force will only be the last resort.

β€œIt has been categorically communicated to the United States that drone strikes are counterproductive and must immediately be stopped,” said Nisar, adding that this continues to be an irritant in Pak-US relationship.

He said that the media should proactively project sacrifices of the law enforcement forces in fighting terrorism.

The government will make an all out effort in enhancing operational capability of the law enforcement agencies, he said.

The minister said that National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) will be the focal point of the government for counter-terrorism and a Joint Intelligence Directorate will be established under this agency for intelligence analysis and coordination among various intelligence agencies.
