PM chairs high-level meeting on national security

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting at the Prime Minister House on Thursday to review the prevailing security situation in the country.

According to a press release, Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif briefed the prime minister about the existing security situation in the country. Different existing terror related legislations were also reviewed.

The meeting was attended by Chief of the Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, DG ISI Lt. General Zahir-ul-Islam, Chief of General Staff Lt. General Ashfaq Nadeem, DG MO Maj. General Amir Riaz, DG MI, Maj. Gen. Sarfaraz Sattar, Minister for Defence Khawaja Asif, Minister for Interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Minister for Information Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar, and Special Assistant to the PM Tariq Fatmi.

The meeting was convened in the wake of recent terror incidents in Bannu, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Mastung and Karachi.

Sources told DawnNews said that a preliminary report on terrorism incidents in the country was presented during the meeting which focused on increasing the effectiveness of intelligence networks.

The sources said that evidence in the report suggested that foreign elements had a hand in the recent terrorist attacks whereas important decisions were made in the meeting to deal with terrorists.

Earlier today, COAS Raheel Sharif also called on the premier separately at the Prime Minister House.

According to a spokesman of the PM House, issues of national importance came under discussion during the meeting, including the recent wave of terrorist attacks in the country.

Sources said DGMO Major Gen Amir Riaz was present at the meeting, adding that he apprised the premier of ongoing operations against militants.

The meeting also considered possible action against terrorists whereas Prime Minister Nawaz was briefed about the forces behind the recent incidents of terrorism.
