Plan to have two flyovers in Gujrat

GUJRAT: The Punjab government has started a survey to prepare a feasibility report to construct two flyovers at major city intersections.

A team of Nespak on Thursday discussed with the officials of the local administration the possibility of selecting Ramtalai Chowk, GTS Chowk and Shaheen Chowk as locations for the flyovers.

Sources told Dawn the Punjab government had decided to launch two to three mega projects in the city and the local representatives had come up with the idea of having flyovers.

PML-N MNA Hamza Shahbaz, who heads the Punjab government’s Public Affairs Committee, has been taking interest in initiating such projects in Gujrat.

An official of the district government said since the traffic flow in various parts of the city had become a major issue, the Punjab government was interested in launching a project which could boost its image in the public eye.

He said GTS Chowk (along GT Road) passing through the city and Shaheen Chowk (along GT Road bypass) area were suitable for the projects but some local PML-N representatives had suggested Ramtalai Chowk for the flyover project. There is no need for a flyover at Ramtalai Chowk as it has a roundabout to regulate the traffic flow.

Shaheen Chowk and GTS Chowk have become dangerous intersections due to the frequency of road accidents in the last two to three years but the local administration has failed to take any step to get rid of the issue.

A delegation of Gujrat lawyers and journalists called on MNA Hamza Shahbaz Sharif at Punjab House, Islamabad on Friday last, where he informed them about the plan to have flyovers.

The delegation had recommended GTS Chowk and Shaheen Chowk for the construction of flyovers besides proposing some other projects especially about the University of Gujrat, the Nawaz Sharif Medical College, and the Aziz Bhatti Shaheed District Headquarters Hospital.

A team comprising engineers and other technical officials discussed the projects with Gujrat DCO Asif Bilal Lodhi who is learnt to have recommended flyovers at Ramtalai Chowk and Shaheen Chowk.
