Bomb defused in Peshwar

PESHAWAR: The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) on Sunday defused a remote-controlled improvised explosive device (IED) planted in Peshawar's Sirband area whereas at least three persons were killed in a clash between policemen and suspected dacoits in Dera Ismail Khan's Panyala area.

Additional inspector general (AIG) of Peshawar's BDS, Shafqat Malik, told Dawn.com that information was received of a suspicious item on the roadside in Sirband area of Peshawar near Chatochok in Pishtkara village.

The disposal squad reached the site and recovered an explosive device which was concealed in a can of edible oil, added AIG Malik.

He further said that the IED, which was fitted with a remote-controlled detonator and weighed five kilograms, was defused by the BDS personnel.

Meanwhile, one person was killed and another 17 were injured in a traffic accident near Chamkani Mor in the suburbs of Peshawar.

The mishap occurred when a vehicle carrying a wedding party turned over whereas the injured included six children and five women.

The victims were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital where one person succumbed to his wounds.

Another person was killed in an armed clash between two rival groups in Badbar area of Peshawar. Further details of the incident were not available but police sources said that the incident appeared to have been a result of a land feud.

In another incident, at least three persons were killed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Dera Ismail Khan district during a clash between policemen and suspected dacoits.

The dead included a cop and two suspects.

Additional contingents of security personnel were called in, as the exchange of gunfire continued till the filing of this report. Further details were not available.
