PPP not consulted on talks with Taliban: Gilani

LAHORE: Former prime minister Yusuf Raza Gilani says his party, the PPP, has extended unconditional support to the government for tackling the menace of terrorism.

Talking to a group of journalists after meeting Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah here on Sunday, he said the PPP had offered unconditional support to the PML-N government on the terrorism issue.

He said though the government did not consult the PPP on dialogue with the Taliban, the party would happily consider giving its input if it was asked to do so.

He, however, avoided comments on the dialogue process, fearing his remarks might hurt the initiative.

About the condition of imposing Shariah law in the country, reportedly being forwarded by the Taliban, the ex-premier said the Constitution was already in conformity with Shariah and thus Islamic law stood enforced.

Referring to the second condition; releasing Taliban prisoners, Mr Gilani urged the government to keep in mind the release of his son, Ali Haider Gilani, allegedly kidnapped for ransom by extremists while he was campaigning ahead of general election in Multan.
