MQM petition in SHC over worker’s killing

KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) against what it called the abduction and murder of one of its workers Mohammad Salman, DawnNews reported.

The petition was filed by Salman's father and party leader Asif Hasnain with the latter alleging that extrajudicial killings were being carried out in the garb of a targeted operation to rid the city of criminal elements.

Hasnain said no case had been registered in relation to Salman's killing, adding that the deceased worker's family members were also being harassed.

The party has made Additional IG Shahid Hayat as respondent in the petition.

Mohammad Salman, an MQM worker of Korangi Sector 75, was allegedly taken into police custody from the city’s Korangi Crossing area on Feb 3 and found dead in a locality near Quaidabad on Feb 5.

The petition follows contact established on Tuesday by former president Asif Ali Zardari and Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah with MQM supremo Altaf Hussain over telephone.

The two had assured Hussain that his party’s grievances would be addressed after the MQM gave an ultimatum to Sindh authorities of taking a ‘tough strategy’ against what it claimed extrajudicial killings of its workers.
