Haris shocks Hunain to make U-21 snooker quarters

KARACHI: Junior Sindh champion Haris Nadeem toppled former national junior champion and wildcard entry Hunain Amir of Punjab 4-2 to sneak into the quarter-finals of the sixth national junior under-21 snooker championship at Movenpick hotel arcade on Tuesday.

Haris made a great comeback into the game from two frames down to turn the tables on Hunain who had featured in under-21 Asian and world championships in 2012.

The Sindh No 1 was home 41-63, 56-59, 67-43, 55-48, 55-18, 96-16 to set a date with Abdul Raheem of Punjab in the last eight fixtures on Wednesday. Haris also piled up a magnificent break of 84 in the sixth frame.

Another wildcard and junior international Amir Tariq of Punjab notched up a convincing 4-0 victory over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Junaid Babar the scores being 42-26, 65-16, 40-1, 83-4.

Joining the last eight among others were national champion Hamza Akbar and last year’s junior under-21 runner-up Mohammad Majid Ali.

The former inflicted 4-2 defeat on junior Sindh No 2 Mohammad Fahad Khan (11-73, 71-60, 81-24, 22-55, 102-29, 73-10) while the latter overcome Punjab’s Saifullah 4-1 (59-41, 53-87, 63-31, 65-13, 98-0).

The four other cueists who were through to the quarters were Mohammad Rafiq (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Abdul Raheem (Punjab), Noman Iqbal (Islamabad) and Mohammad Faheem (Punjab).

The quarter-finals will be played on Wednesday at 10am followed by semi-finals in the afternoon.
