Swabi varsity administration, students at odds

SWABI: The negotiations between the University of Swabi student leaders and management over the registrar’s transfer and reinstatement of expelled students remained deadlocked on Tuesday.

Before talks, the Pukhtun Students Federation activists and their supporters gathered on the campus.

The Insaf Students Federation workers later joined them.

The PSF students from colleges in the district also reached the university gate.

However, police, who were present there in large numbers, didn’t allow them to enter the premises.

Zafar Iqbal, PSF general secretary, said the university registrar invited them for talks.

According to him, the students were represented by PSF president Osama Khan and general secretary Zafar Iqbal, ISF president Mohammad Shahzad and chairman Alamgir Khan, while

Shahzad Mohmand and Altaf Khan, two members of negotiation committee (constituted by students) also participated in the meeting.

The university team was represented by Vice Chancellor Professor Noor Jehan, Registrar Sher Alam Khan and other academic staff.

The students stuck to their two demands i.e. reinstatement of all expelled students and the registrar’s transfer.

Mr Iqbal said the registrar was not eligible to hold his grade-19 post as he was a grade-18 officer.

“We want the administration to remove him from the post,” he said.

He said the university administration had sought two days for response to the students’ demands.

“We have given the sought-after time to make a decision on the registrar and expelled students,” he said.

The student leader threatened agitation on campus if the said demands were not met.
