Two more Thar babies die in Hyderabad hospital

HYDERABAD: Another two babies who had been brought to Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) Hyderabad from Umerkot and Mithi died of birth asphyxia and congenital pneumonia on Monday, raising death toll to three in over a week.

Eleven sick children had been shifted to the LUH since Friday who suffered from severe alnutrition and other diseases following famine-like situation in Tharparkar.

Dr Faraz Ahmed at the hospital’s paediatric unit-2 told Dawn that two-day-old Samina of Umerkot and Babu, son of Wasdev, of Mithi, of the same age were admitted on Sunday and they breathed their last at 4am and 4:15am, respectively on Monday.

Giving details, LUH Hyderabad spokesperson Dr Nasrullah Memon said that 11 patients had been brought from various areas of Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mithi and others since Friday to Monday to the LUH Hyderabad.

Three babies died, six were admitted and two were discharged after giving medical treatment.

Of six patients, 11-month-old Shaimir from Chhachhro and three-year-old Raju from Umerkot were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) because they were in critical condition because of meningitis and other diseases.

Four-year-old girl Raju from Mithi was being treated for tetanus in an isolated room while 10-month-old Jesho Bheel from Mithi was admitted to the Nutrition Stabilization Centre (NSC) on account of severe pneumonia and malnutrition.

One-month-old Mukesh from Mithi was in nursery due to meningitis and hydrocephalus while four-day-old baby of Amnat from Mithi was in paediatric unit-1 due to sepsis and chest infection.

Four-year-old Fehmida and her three-year-old brother Rashid from Chhachhro were discharged after treatment.
