PHF Executive Board meeting on 16th

LAHORE: The 27th Executive Board meeting of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) will be held at the National Hockey Stadium here on April 16.

Although PHF secretary Rana Mujahid Ali said that meeting will be of significance nature as various important agenda items are on the card, he did not disclose the details.

However, it is learnt that the Executive Board will approve the names of the national selection committee, new head coach and manager of both its senior and junior teams.

As several former prominent Olympians namely Shahnaz Sheikh, Islahuddin Siddiqi and Manzoor Junior have joined the PHF after ending their differences with the federation since Akhtar Rasool was elected president in place of Qasim Zia, they all are likely to get important positions.

The afore-mentioned Olympians are favourites for the post of chief selector, head coach and manager. Manzoor-ul-Hasan Junior, who is already in the camp of Akhtar Rasool may be retained in the junior team management.

Currently, the main issue with the PHF is not to finalise the team managements of its senior and junior teams, as it has a gigantic task of generating financial resources with the federal government having not issued any grant to it for the last two years.

The last time PHF received a financial grant from the federal government was ahead of the 2012 London Olympics.

Sources, however, said Akhtar Rasool is trying his best to convince the federal government to release an amount of Rs650 million for the PHF, to implement its activity plans.

Pakistan, once recognised as giant in world hockey, have failed to win a major title since 1994 when they won both the World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Pakistan have since only triumphed at the 2010 Asian Games and the newly-introduced Asian Champions Trophy.
