Digitruck, roach prints feature on last day

Rizwan Beyg proved to be a fitting opening act on the last and final day of the PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2014 with accessory pieces from his truck art collection shown earlier after converting it to fabric digital print called Digitruck by playing around with the base design and no doubt product longevity issues.

It resulted in a snazzy, vibrant line that was fine tuned to the designer’s aesthetics and style sensibilities. Of course the accessories were all there from his previous truck art showing at the TDAP show in Karachi last year. Coupled with the right look, it gave new meaning to the vibrant art by local artisans and also a new lease on life. Colourful, with an element of surprise and certain shock value, there’s no denying the fact that you have to leave it to a master to pull out all the stops when it comes to the fashion runway.

If there’s a market out there for roach prints coupled with bling elements which we remain oblivious of, then designer Zara Shahjehan most definitely catered to it in her segment. Done intelligently, it just might have worked but there was nothing visionary about her approach to the design and it resulted in a confused line that seemed awkward at best.

Newcomer designer duo and PIFD graduates Saira Shakira showed for the first time on the PFDC platform and could have done a much better job of it. With a theme strongly borrowed by a deck of playing cards, the show opener and showreel supported the act of cigarette smoking, which one hopes was strongly indicative of the act of open rebellion against a suppressive society and not for the sake of mere rebellion. Anyways, the collection at best was average with a few promising style sensibilities but still rough around the edges. Given that they are newcomers, one hopes they will get their act together soon enough.

Popular favourites Khaadi Khaas, Akif Mahmood and HSY showed after the extended mid-way break, the latter ending the show with a superbly executed grand finale.
