City govt violates ban on waste dumping

RAWALPINDI: The ban imposed by the city district government on dumping of waste into Leh Nullah is being violated by its own Rawalpindi Waste Management Company.

The company was tasked with the job of lifting garbage from residential and commercial areas and dumping it at the landfill site in Losar. However, the sanitary workers of the company instead of taking the waste to the landfill site are dumping it into the nullah.

The city government has fixed Rs500 as fine on the citizens found disposing waste into the nullah. However, it has failed to implement the ban on its own workers.

“Every year we spend about Rs6 million on removing garbage and construction material from the nullah,” said Wasa Managing Director Raja Shaukat Mehmood, adding that the agency did not have power to impose fine on the violators of the ban.

The now defunct solid waste department was authorised to take action against the violators but after the formation of the waste management company it is now the responsibility of the city government to stop this practice.
