Gujrat admin seeks army deployment

GUJRAT: The district administration has sought deployment of army at sensitive locations and security installations in the district.

The local police have meanwhile issued a security plan by enhancing the patrolling of Quick Response Force (QRF) around important government sites to cope with any possible backlash of militants in reaction to a military operation launched in the North Waziristan Agency.

Talking to Dawn, District Coordination Officer Liaqat Ali Chatha confirmed that the deployment of the troops in Gujrat had been sought. He said three companies of army from the Sialkot Garrison would be deployed at sensitive locations.

Official sources said the troops would mainly perform the security duty at the Shadiwal Power House along the Upper Jhelum Canal, the University of Gujrat and railway track along the hilly and forest area of Rakh Pabbi Sarkar between Kharian and Sara-i-Alamgir.

Rest of the government locations, including the district government complex, the DPO office, the police stations, district and tehsil courts, fruit and vegetable markets across the district and other public sites will be given security by the patrolling parties of the QRF.

Besides the army troops, the QRF would patrol the area surrounding the UoG for 24 hours, said an official of the local police.

District Police Officer Rai Ijaz Ahmed said a fresh security plan had been issued for safeguarding important official and public locations in the district as police would also look after the security of the police stations, all the railway stations falling under respective police stations of the district.
