Opinion: Believe in yourself

THEODORE Roosevelt was the 26th president of America. Although he was the 26th president, he was a man of many firsts. He was the first and only President born in the New York City, the youngest man ever to become president, the first president to ride in an automobile, a submarine and an airplane. He was the first to leave United States of America and visit a foreign country during his presidency and the first president and American to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

Roosevelt said: “Believe you can, and you’re halfway there.” And the aforementioned accomplishments of his fully support his quote.

An acceptance that something exists or is true without any proof is belief. It is the faith, hope and confidence in something or someone. Believing in ourselves is an important part of our own character building. Before having a chance to achieve anything one needs to believe that whatever they are doing is possible and can be done by them.

A negative attitude would, in the end, turn around and hurt us in the long run.

If we believe in something, we try hard to accomplish it. We try with all our might and power, however, if we ourselves will not believe in something then even the possible cannot be accomplished.

If we do not believe in ourselves, we cannot expect other people to believe in us. We can see millions and millions of extraordinary examples of talent being rejected but when a talented person believed in himself, in the end it had to be recognised.

The Harry Potter series, which almost every single one of us has read, would not be there if JK Rowling had not believed in it. The first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times by different publishers, but JK Rowling believed in it and her talent got accepted and published in the end.

Take the example of the light bulb. Today we cannot imagine our lives without it, but the inventor of the light bulb, Thomas Edison, failed more than 1000 times before he could successfully create it. He did not give up, he believed he could do it and proved to the world by doing it.

The creation of Pakistan, the struggles of the Muslims of the subcontinent, and the continuous efforts of M.A. Jinnah itself is the biggest example of belief in oneself, because if it would not have been there, today we would not have Pakistan.

The word ‘impossible’ itself consists of the phrase ‘I’m possible’ so we shouldn’t give up easily. Believing in oneself is winning half the battle. If we do not believe in ourselves, how can we expect others to believe in us?
