SHO sentenced to 20 years in prison for tampering record

RAWALPINDI: A former SHO of Ratta Amral was sentenced to 20-year imprisonment and fined Rs200,000 on Monday for tampering with police record and denying rape victim registration of a case.

Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan, special judge Anti-Corruption Establishment, while convicting Inspector Jawad Abbas, said if the convict failed to pay the fine, he will have to serve one more year in jail.

However, the other accused in the case, SI Zafar Iqbal and head constable Mohammad Faisal, were released for want of evidence.

According to the prosecution, a rape victim was denied registration of a case by Jawad Abbas in March 2012.

After the incident was reported in media, the Supreme Court took notice and sought report from the then inspector general of police.

A five-member high powered police team conducted an inquiry and found the police station record tampered with which led to the registration of a case against the three police officials — the then SHO Jawad Abbas, SI Zafar Iqbal and head constable Mohammad Faisal.

The anti-corruption’s special court tried the three police officials and convicted Jawad Abbas and freed the other accused.
