Artichive: Gothic Art

The Gothic Art period started in Europe in 1150-1200 and it lasted till 1440 AD. Its major feature was the distinctive amalgamation of sculpture, stained glass, illuminated manuscripts and architecture. These artworks were intricate, loaded with spiritual passion and symbolism as Biblical stories were painted, sermonised, embellished and interpreted to create a credible belief system.

Being exclusively religious art, it lent substantial weight to the growing power of Church in Rome as well as firmly established the connection between religion and art which became the foundation of the Early Renaissance.

Famous artists of the early Gothic art were Cimabue, Duccio, Giotte and Simone Martini.

One of the first famous paintings of this period was Cimabue’s ‘Madonna Enthroned’ (1280-90) which is currently displayed at The Uffizi Gallery, Florence, Italy.— M.I.
