BISP striving to reduce poverty: Baig

QUETTA: Millions of people have benefited from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) financially or through its Waseela-i-Rozgar, Waseela-i-Haq, Waseela-i-Sehat and Waseela-i-Taleem schemes.

BISP Chairman Enver Baig said this during a meeting with Balochistan Chief Minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch.

Senator Baig informed Mr Baloch on Thursday that several projects had been launched in various parts of the country to eradicate poverty. He said thousands of deserving people still remained deprived of the benefits because they did not have their national identity cards, an essential requirement to be able to seek such assistance.

Thousands have set up their businesses under the Waseela-i-Rozgar programme, he said.

The meeting was informed that Waseela-i-Taleem scheme had been launched in Noshki district where 1,650 children were being paid Rs200 per month. Five more districts will soon be included in the project.

The BISP plans to provide technical training to the youth so that they could benefit from job opportunities abroad, especially in Gulf states. Mr Baig said that an agreement would be signed with the Balochistan government soon for upgrading the technical training centres.
