BISP chairman tenders resignation
ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Enver Baig resigned from his position on Tuesday.
Baig submitted his resignation letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif during a meeting which took place before the premier's departure to Nepal in order to attend the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (Saarc) summit in Kathmandu.
Sources told Dawn that Baig had objections to the bureaucracy acting as a hurdle to implement the PM's vision in BISP.
The BISP was initiated in October 2008 with an initial allocation of Rs34 billion by the previous PPP government. The programme aims at covering almost 40 per cent of the population below the poverty line.
Baig was appointed its chairman last year in November.
