ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday left for Bahrain on a two-day official visit.

During his visit, PM Nawaz will hold meetings with King Hamad and his counterpart, along with select ministers of Bahrain.

In a pre-departure statement, the premier expressed confidence that his visit will open new vistas of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the field of energy and help Pakistan overcome its acute energy shortage.

"Relations between the two countries are deeply rooted in in shared history, faith, values, and culture and are based on mutual trust and understanding," PM Nawaz remarked.

The PM further said that Pakistan is keen to improve bilateral economic ties with Bahrain — which are reflective of the fraternal warmth that exists between the two countries. He added that Pakistan also aims to increase bilateral trade volume with Bahrain which currently stands at $200 million.

The delegation-level talks and one-on-one meeting with Bahrain's King Hamad will focus on further enhancing bilateral relations in various fields — including energy cooperation, manpower employment, trade investment and defence.

The PM is visiting Bahrain on the invitation of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa who is the prime minister of Bahrain.
