Bride, five others die as wall collapses on Lahore wedding stage

LAHORE: As many as six people were killed when a wall collapsed on a stage during a wedding ceremony in Lahore, DawnNews reported late on Tuesday.

Two women and two children were also among the dead while 20 others were injured in the incident at the marriage hall in the provincial capital's Shadbagh area.

The newly-erected wall collapsed amidst rain in the area.

The wall collapsed on a large number of people present at and around the stage. Injured and bodies were rushed to Mayo and Kot Khawaja Saeed hospitals where doctors pronounced six people dead.

Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif expressed profound grief over the incident and ordered an inquiry into the matter. He has also directed that all facilities be provided to the injured receiving treatment at hospitals.

In a statement, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain also expressed his grief for the heirs of those affected.

Meanwhile, the district administration has initiated a probe to determine if the wall collapsed due to usage of substandard material or for any other reason.
