Winter festivals around the world

THIS is regarding the cover story “Winter festivals around the world” compiled by Benazir Raz Soomro (YW, December 20, 2014). It was an interesting article with very nice pictures. How I wish such festivals were held in our country too so that we would have also enjoyed some fun and games in ice.

Astronomy

THIS is regarding the article “Asteroids, meteorites, meteors and shooting stars”, by Arif A. Abbasi (YW, January 3, 2015) in ‘Astronomy’ section. I found the article very informative because before reading it I could not differentiate between meteors, meteorites and shooting stars, but this article cleared my concepts. I am thankful to the writer and the YW team.

Inconceivable courage

I WAS surprised to read Rumlah Selmi’s response to the heart-touching article “Inconceivable courage” by Mateen Ahmed, in which he shared his ordeal on the black day of Pakistan’s history i.e. December 16.

Unless and until we share with our children facts about the tragic incident and show them the true faces of the barbaric terrorists who leashed out unprecedented terror on innocent children, we cannot prepare them to survive in these harsh times or struggle for better ones!

As a mother and grandmother, I also worry about all the children who are going to school, but I think it is important to discuss issues to create more awareness amongst children. Teaching them to bury their heads in the sand like ostriches will not help our young generation in any way! Kids are smarter and braver than we give them credit for, as is evident from the heroism shown by the children of Army Public School Peshawar.

II

DECEMBER 16th, 2014, brought a great tragedy to this nation — a terrible day that we can never forget throughout our lives.

We share the sorrow of the parents who lost their children on this doomed day and are bearing the grief that is inconceivable.

The children who are not with us today had the bravest souls as they faced the enemy and sacrificed their lives for this nation.

The ones who have survived the tragedy are no less brave, and we salute their courage and stand united with them.

Ramsha Farooq, Karachi
