Gwadar UC chairman shot dead

GWADAR: A newly elected chairman of a union council in Gwadar district was gunned down by unknown armed men here on Tuesday evening.

Police said Nasir Jamal Kalmati, head of Chhab Union Council, was targeted in Gwadar town while on way home in his car. The armed men, riding a motorcycle, opened indiscriminate fire using automatic weapons. He received multiple bullet injuries.

Despite being seriously injured, he retaliated by opening fire on the attackers, but they managed to escape.

Nasir Kalmati was immediately shifted to district hospital Gwadar, and after initial treatment, was referred to a Karachi hospital.

But he died during the journey near Pasni.

Kalmati, belonging to BNP-Mengal, was elected UC chairman in the elections held on Jan 28.

Police and personnel of Frontier Corps rushed to the site after the incident and began investigation.

The cause of killing could not be ascertained till late in the evening.

“We are investigating the incident,” a senior police officer said.
