Staff flee as Ghotki excise office raided

SUKKUR: The staff at the Ghotki district office of the excise & taxation department fled when an anti-corruption establishment (ACE) team, along with a civil judge, carried out a raid on Wednesday to verify complaints of serious irregularities.

ACE Ghotki circle officer Saifullah Phulpoto, along with Second Civil Judge Samiullah Qureshi carried out a raid on the office at Mirpur Mathelo but all employees present there took to their heels. The raiding team sealed the record and took it away with it.

Mr Phulpoto, sharing one of the complaints with journalists, said that the amounts written in receipts being issued to tax payers differed from what their copies kept in the office record showed. For example, he said, the original receipt showed collection of Rs5,000 but its copy showed Rs500. By resorting to such tricks, the staff were pocketing big amounts of public money on a daily basis causing a huge loss to the exchequer.
