Schools protest commercial fees

BAHAWALNAGAR: Private school owners are protesting against the imposition of commercial fees on buildings by the Bahawalnagar Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA).

On Wednesday, seven schools which were sealed for defaulting on the fees held classes in streets in protest at the action while other several schools held a strike in solidarity with the sealed schools and in protest at the municipality action.

School owners say the fees run in hundreds of thousands while their meagre profits do not allow them to comply with TMA notices.

During working hours, hundreds of students and teachers gathered outside the TMA office and staged a demonstration there.

They said they rejected the fees and the sealing of seven schools and demanded cancellation of the fee.

The parents also called TMA action ‘anti-education’.

TMA officials refused to comment.
